Island musicians performing in Fort McMurray, Alta.

SYDNEY —
An impressive lineup of East Coast musicians, including
several Cape Bretoners, are descending on Fort McMurray,
Alta. for the final weekend of the 2012 Syncrude WinterPlay
Festival.
The
three-week festival celebrating the community’s culture,
climate and people comes to a close this weekend with hockey
games, activities, and plenty of entertainment.
Former
Nova Scotia premier and renowned fiddler, Rodney MacDonald,
will be performing, along with Cape Breton fiddler Blair
MacDonald and Iain Beaton, member of the band Fourth Well.
Port
Hood’s Mitch MacDonald, well-known for finishing in the
runner-up position on Canadian Idol, will also perform, and
Eddie Cummings, of The Eddie Cummings Band which hails from
Mabou, will bring a mixture of rock, country, and original
songs to the stage.
Several
other Nova Scotia bands are in the northern Alberta
community for the festivities including Alert the Medic, and
The Stanfields.
The final
weekend of the festival kicks off tonight, when the puck
drops for the first of two special exhibition pond hockey
games, the first between the RCMP and the Regional
Municipality of Wood Buffalo Fire Department, and the second
featuring the East Coast musicians versus an all-star RCMP/fire
department team. |
