SYDNEY — An impressive lineup of East Coast musicians, including several Cape Bretoners, are descending on Fort McMurray, Alta. for the final weekend of the 2012 Syncrude WinterPlay Festival.

The three-week festival celebrating the community’s culture, climate and people comes to a close this weekend with hockey games, activities, and plenty of entertainment.

Former Nova Scotia premier and renowned fiddler, Rodney MacDonald, will be performing, along with Cape Breton fiddler Blair MacDonald and Iain Beaton, member of the band Fourth Well.

Port Hood’s Mitch MacDonald, well-known for finishing in the runner-up position on Canadian Idol, will also perform, and Eddie Cummings, of The Eddie Cummings Band which hails from Mabou, will bring a mixture of rock, country, and original songs to the stage.

Several other Nova Scotia bands are in the northern Alberta community for the festivities including Alert the Medic, and The Stanfields.

The final weekend of the festival kicks off tonight, when the puck drops for the first of two special exhibition pond hockey games, the first between the RCMP and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Fire Department, and the second featuring the East Coast musicians versus an all-star RCMP/fire department team.
