Musicians rally round the flag
GREG MCNEIL, The Cape Breton Post

SYDNEY — Time, energy and emotional commitments by local artists continue to be added to a celebration of Cape Breton culture that is now doubling as a show of support for Canada’s troops in Afghanistan.

Cape Breton Live, which takes place May 11 at the Sydney Marine Terminal, was originally the kickoff for a cross-Canada tour but quickly became more when the military approached show producers to help with Cape Breton’s Red Friday Rally.

“It has taken on a life of its own,” said co-producer Max MacDonald.

“I can only think back to one or two things I have done that have felt like this. I can remember when we put a show together for John Allan Cameron, it felt like this. That show came together in a matter of hours. The artists just wanted to be part of it. They needed to be there almost. This is what this show feels like. It has that kind of urgency about it, that kind of enthusiasm.”

Confirmed performers include Buddy MacDonald, Troy MacGillivray, Howie MacDonald, Fred Lavery, Glen Graham, Andrea Beaton, Kate Quinn, Matt Minglewood, Ashley MacIssac, Bruce Guthro, Bob Quinn, Bette MacDonald, Matt MacIssac, Maynard Morrison, Cheryl Smith and Stephanie Hardy. Others are expected to be announced.

A video history of Cape Breton’s military is also part of the lineup.

“To think we just put this together in the last week gives you some idea of the kind of enthusiasm artists have for this.”

Artists will also be part of the Red Friday rally beginning at 11:30 a.m. They’ll then return for a more formal performance that night when Cape Breton Live begins at 8 p.m.

The show and parts of the rally will be taped by the CBC and shown a short time later to troops in Afghanistan.

“The show will be a positive celebration of music and a statement of support for our troops,” said Quinn, who developed the show concept with Donnell Leahy and Natalie MacMaster.

“The incredible enthusiasm for this show of support is truly a testament to the Cape Breton character and is sure to be noticed by the rest of the country.”
